WSO2 Stratos is the most complete, enterprise-grade, open PaaS, with support for more core services than any other available PaaS today.

What is the difference between Stratos 1.x and 2.0?

Stratos 2.0 is the next major version of Stratos 1.x, that includes polyglot language and environment support together with the ability to run on top of multiple IaaS runtimes.

What is meant by private jet mode?

Private jet mode refers to a single tenant Cartridge deployment where the tenant will have a separate Cartridge instance spawned.

What is meant by economy class mode?

Economy class mode refers to a multi-tenant Cartridge deployment where the tenant will share a Cartridge instance.

What is the difference in between a single tenant Cartridge and a multi-tenant Cartridge?
  • A single tenant Cartridge is where the tenant will have a separate Cartridge instance spawned; whereas, in a multi-tenant cartridge the tenants will share an instance of the selected Cartridge.
  • Resources are specially dedicated for single tenant Cartridges; whereas, multi-tenant Cartridges share resources.
  • Due to the latter mentioned point, single tenant Cartridges are more costly as opposed to a multi-tenant Cartridges.
Is the data secure in multi-tenant Cartridges?

The data is secure when using multi-tenant Cartridges, as even though you share a single instance of a Cartridge, your data is isolated from other tenants.

What are the types of cloud environments that Stratos can be deployed on?

Stratos is a PaaS that can be deployed in a private, public or hybrid cloud environment. A private cloud provides the hosted services and applications to a limited number of people behind a firewall. Whereas, a public cloud provides the hosted services and applications to the general public over the internet. A hybrid cloud manages some services and applications in-house, while the others are provided externally.

What is the advantage of a hybrid cloud environment?

A hybrid cloud environment is a combination of a private and a public cloud environment. This approach allows an organization to take advantage of the cost effectiveness and scalability, while at the same time mitigating the risk of third-party vulnerability.

Is there a way to reconfigure an already provisioned VM?

...

Currently there is no feature to provide any SSH or FTP access to VM. Only Git based file up or down can be done.

How do we automate the provisioning of tenants and services that may involve several Cartridges

...

to work?

Currently this is not supported. However, this feature will be available in next release. In the next release, there will be a feature with the application create concept, so that when you create an application you can group or bundle many Cartridges together that are required for that particular application.

How would I go about creating a custom Cartridge? Is it something that can be done using a VM tool like Virtualbox and then imported?

In the current architecture you will have to create custom Cartridges using the underline IaaS. For example if it is EC2, then you can create an EC2 instance and then install or configure the required software to that custom Cartridge. You will also have to install or configure the Stratos 2 related configurations (for more information please see steps 3 to 5 under Non-carbon Cartridges). Then, you can create an AMI out of that instance. You can use the AMI ID to create a Cartridge XML and it can be registered with the Stratos Cloud Controller.
