Working with Taxonomies in the Publisher

Taxonomy refers to the process of classifying information into structured groups. For example, if you have a lot of information on your website, you can generate the navigation keeping in mind your site visitors way of thinking. Taxonomy functionality enables you to categorize all your information in a hierarchical format. Thereby, giving the users to ability to discover the information easily through the ease of navigation. Furthermore, Taxonomy allows assets to be classified appropriately. Generally, you will have many categories with a vast domain that covers a lot of different kinds of assets. 

In WSO2 ES, the Taxonomy feature allows the admin of an organization to define the Taxonomy as an XML representation so that Store users can discover assets by navigating to a set of groupings organized into a hierarchy. Furthermore, the asset publisher can assign an asset to a grouping within the Taxonomy, based on a defined taxonomy.

Applying a Taxonomy to an asset type

Follow the instructions below to apply a Taxonomy to an asset type:

  1. Click Taxonomy and then click Select Taxonomy.
  2. The taxonomies that are available for the selected asset type appear.
  3. Click on a Taxonomy of your choice.
  4. Click on the respective nodes in the Taxonomy hierarchy to navigate to the respective leaf node that you wish to apply to the asset.

    Note the following when adding Taxonomies hierarchies to an asset:

    • Only add an asset to the leaf node. 
    • Select multiple nodes from one Taxonomy for a specific asset.
    • Multiple Taxonomies are not allowed for a single asset.


    The list of Taxonomy hierarchy nodes that the asset was added to appear.

  5. Optionally, if you wish to remove an applied Taxonomy node, click the remove option in the Applied Taxonomies list.
  6. Click Add to finalize the asset creation process.

Updating the Taxonomy nodes of an asset type

Follow the instructions below to update the taxonomy nodes that were applied to an asset type:

  1. Sign into the WSO2 ES Publisher Console.
  2. Search for the asset.
  3. Click on the thumbnail of the asset. The asset details page appears.
  4. Click Taxonomy.
  5. Optionally, if you wish to replace an existing Taxonomy node with another node,
    1. Double click on the respective Taxonomy node that is listed in the Applied Taxonomies list.
    2. Select a new Taxonomy node.
    3. Click Update to replace the selected Taxonomy node with the new selection.
  6. Optionally, if you wish to add a new Taxonomy node.
    1. Click on a Taxonomy of your choice.
    2. Click on the respective nodes in the Taxonomy hierarchy to navigate to the respective leaf node that you wish to apply to the asset.

      Note the following when adding Taxonomies hierarchies to an asset:

      • Only add an asset to the leaf node. 
      • Select multiple nodes from one Taxonomy for a specific asset.
      • Multiple Taxonomies are not allowed for a single asset.
  7. Optionally, if you wish to remove a selected Taxonomy node click the remove option in the Applied Taxonomies list.
  8. Click Update to finalize the asset updating process.
